IELTS One Skill Retake: The Game-Changing Approach to Improving Your Score

by | Mar 22, 2023 | About IELTS

What you will learn in this article:

Introduction

The IELTS One Skill Retake is a recently introduced feature by IELTS, allowing test takers to retake only one module (Listening/ Reading/ Writing/ Speaking) after their full test to improve their score in that module as well as the overall score.

Candidates can choose to retake one of the four modules within 60 days from the original test date. This presents a fantastic opportunity for those planning to immigrate or study abroad. The new policy is a bold move by IELTS, likely in response to market competition, but ultimately benefiting test takers.

This is particularly good news for candidates who have struggled to achieve the band score they need in one specific module, such as writing.

IELTS One Skill Retake is available for both Academic and General Training modules.

Advantages

Some of the advantages of the IELTS One Skill Retake include:

Familiarity with the test format

The format and time limits for retaking each module remain the same as in the full test. Candidates can use the same test-taking strategies and expect the same question types and assessment criteria.

No risk to other module scores

Previously, test takers had to retake the entire test to improve the score of one module, putting their scores in the other three modules at risk. Now, the scores for the three modules are preserved while they have an extra chance to increase the score of the fourth module.

For example, Express Entry immigration to Canada requires a band score of 8 in Listening and 7 in Reading, Writing, and Speaking for many applicants. These applicants usually struggle to achieve a 7 in Writing. With the new policy, they can retake only the Writing module without risking their scores in the other modules.

Efficient skill improvement

Focusing on improving one skill is a more efficient and simpler task compared to retake the entire test. This is especially beneficial for candidates who have difficulty increasing their Writing score from 6.5 to 7.

Flexibility in using test results

After the One Skill Retake, candidates will receive a new Test Report Form (TRF), but the original TRF remains valid. They can choose which one to use, ensuring they do not risk the validity of their original results.

Can I Apply?

Yes, only if you have recently completed an IELTS on computer test from a center that offers IELTS One Skill Retake. It is important to note that the retake must be completed within 60 days of the original test date.

Currently, the IELTS One Skill Retake is only offered at selected test centers in Australia. It is expected that more countries will introduce this feature in 2023. For pricing and other details, candidates should inquire at the test centers offering this option.

We will update this page as new information becomes available. You can bookmark this page to return for the latest news. Check back monthly, and hopefully, the IELTS One Skill Retake will be available in your country soon.
